When you are using your toothbrush, you clean your chompers and gums — but are you also cleaning off your tongue? While there are several choices for cleaning your tongue, one awesome option is to use a tongue cleaner. Tongue cleaners come in some options:

Tongue scrapers: Tongue scrapers are tools specifically designed to get rid of bacteria from the tongue, and it’s the one most associated with tongue cleaning. Tongue scrapers are utilized by placing the tip of the scraper at the back of the oral cavity, then pulling the scraper forward. Rinse off the scraper just as you would a brush after brushing.

Tongue brushes: Tongue brushes are new to the dental hygiene scene, and they look like a typical toothbrush, but their bristles are developed to clean the crevices of tongues. These work about as effectively as a tongue scraper, and you can sometimes find combo tongue brushes/toothbrushes.

Toothbrushes: Finally, you can also use a toothbrush to clean your tongue. Although this method doesn’t require you to acquire another oral tool, it will not clean your tongue as effectively: tongue scrapers are about 50% more powerful than toothbrushes at removing bacteria and slime from tongues.

If you’re considering a pinker, cleaner tongue, a tongue cleaner might be right for you. To learn more about tongue scrapers, please phone us at 972-636-2417 now to speak with Drs. Edmon R. Hutchison and/or our Royse City, Texas, Royse City Dental Care team.

Gum disease happens when the gum tissue surrounding your pearly whites pull back from the tooth and exposing the tooth and tooth roots. As this occurs, gaps begin to form between the teeth and the gum line, allowing the buildup of harmful plaque-causing bacteria in these “pockets”. As this plaque hardens, it can cause long-term problems including tooth loss.

How does this happen?
No. 1 Gum disease (or periodontitis) can result from improper brushing and daily flossing.
No. 2 Gum tissue can be affected by nighttime grinding and clenching of teeth as it wears down the enamel.
No. 3 An injury to the mouth can cause gum tissue to recede from the tooth.
No. 4 You may be at higher risk for gum disease if one or both of your parents have receding gums.
No. 6 Brushing your teeth harshly can wear down tooth enamel and gum tissue.
No. 7 If your bite is misaligned (it doesn’t match up), the constant pressure on individual teeth can create gum recession.

4 Steps to Prevent Gum Disease:
No. 1 Use a soft-bristled tooth brush and brush gently but thoroughly. Don’t forget to floss!
No. 2 Use an antimicrobial toothpaste and mouth rinse to reduce the amount of harmful in the mouth.
No. 3 Wearing a night guard can help to prevent clenching and grinding of your pearly whites while you sleep.
No 4 Six month dental cleanings will remove calculus to prevent periodontitis.

You don’t have to let gum disease keep your smile at bay. If you think you are experiencing gum disease, see one of our dentists for an evaluation and begin any necessary treatment. Untreated gum disease can eventually result in tooth loss. We invite you to call our Royse City Dental Care staff at 972-636-2417 today!
