While fillings are meant to be very durable, often repairing a tooth for years, they still require substantially healthy tooth enamel to anchor onto. If a new cavity forms on a tooth with a pre-existing filling, there might not be enough viable tooth enamel remaining for a new filling to be applied. To treat a tooth in this condition, Drs. Hutchison, Gabrielsen, and Craig might recommend treatment with a dental crown.

This restoration method typically requires two separate appointments at our dental office to replace the entirety of the tooth enamel with another material.

We start the restoration treatment by examining the tooth and taking some X-rays. Assuming the interior structures of the tooth remain healthy, we can begin the process of forming an abutment.

To do this, your dentists will use a drill to remove the entire enamel layer of the tooth, leaving behind a pillar of unaffected dentin. This abutment will later anchor the crown firmly in your mouth.

We will then create an impression of the abutment and surrounding teeth before covering the abutment with a temporary crown. The impression will be sent off to a dental lab technician who will custom make your new crown.

You will need to come back in for short second appointment when your crown is ready. Your dentists will carefully remove the temporary crown and cement your new crown into place over the abutment.

If you live in the Royse City, Texas, area and you have a tooth with a new cavity, you should not delay in calling 972-636-2417 to seek treatment at Royse City Dental Care.

A large cavity on one of your teeth can severely compromise the tooth’s ability to effectively chew food. Without timely repair, it could lead to other complications and problems with your oral health. In some cases, the cavity can be so large that your Royse City Dental Care dentist simply can’t repair it with a filling.

In a situation like this, your dentist will likely recommend restoring the entire enamel layer of the badly decayed tooth by installing a crown.

At the first appointment your dentist will examine the tooth, to assess the extent of the decay and make sure the pulp and other interior structures of the tooth are healthy.

Next, they will remove the enamel layer of the tooth leaving a post-like abutment behind. The abutment is essentially the dentin, and pulp of the tooth still anchored securely in the socket.

Once this is done they will make a detailed impression of the area. This will be sent to a dental lab, that custom makes your permanent crown. Then the dentist will secure a hard plastic temporary crown over the abutment to protect it.

We will call you to schedule your second appointment once the dental lab has completed your permanent crown. During this brief appointment, the temporary crown is removed and your permanent crown is cemented in place. With proper care and cleaning it should restore your badly decayed tooth for many years to come.

If one of your teeth is suffering from a large cavity, you should call Royse City Dental Care’s office in Royse City, Texas at 972-636-2417 to explore your treatment and restoration options.
