When poor oral hygiene habits cause a cavity to form on one of the teeth in your smile, it can leave you feeling self-conscious and socially awkward. If the cavity is significant in size, it might not be viable for repair with a simple composite filling.

For a tooth this seriously afflicted, Dr. Edmon R. Hutchison might recommend restoring the entire tooth enamel layer with a porcelain dental crown. This is a replica of the enamel layer cast from a special dental-grade porcelain material.  

Dr. Edmon R. Hutchison will start by using a drill to remove the entire tooth enamel layer. Then, they will make an impression of the abutment and surrounding teeth. This will be sent to a dental lab where the porcelain crown will be custom made. A temporary crown will be secured onto the abutment to keep it safe.

You will need to come back for a brief second appointment after the dental lab technician has completed the crown. The temporary crown will be carefully removed and your new crown will be cemented into place.
