An appealing smile is an important element in a healthy and productive social life. When poor oral hygiene habits cause a cavity to form on one of the teeth in your smile, it can leave you feeling self-conscious and socially awkward. If the cavity is significant in size, it might not be viable for repair with a simple composite filling.

For a tooth this seriously afflicted, Dr. Edmon R. Hutchison might recommend restoring the entire tooth enamel layer with a porcelain dental crown. This is a replica of the enamel layer cast from a special dental-grade porcelain material.

Dr. Edmon R. Hutchison will start by using a drill to remove the entire tooth enamel layer. Then, they will make an impression of the abutment and surrounding teeth. This will be sent to a dental lab where the porcelain crown will be custom made. A temporary crown will be secured onto the abutment to keep it safe.

You will need to come back for a brief second appointment after the dental lab technician has completed the crown. The temporary crown will be carefully removed and your new crown will be cemented into place.

If you have a cavity on one of your teeth, you should call 972-636-2417 to schedule treatment at Royse City Dental Care.

Tooth enamel is designed by nature to be strong and durable enough to handle biting, chewing and grinding hard foods. Unfortunately, there are still times when an accident or oral injury can actually break, fracture or chip a tooth. So long as the internal structures of the tooth are healthy, Dr. Edmon R. Hutchison can often repair the broken tooth by replacing the enamel layer with a crown.

This is essentially a replica tooth made from either porcelain, gold or a base metal alloy. It usually takes two separate appointments to fully install a crown.

During your first appointment Dr. Edmon R. Hutchison will use a drill to remove the tooth enamel and form an abutment. This will later serve to anchor the crown in your mouth. Dr. Edmon R. Hutchison will then make an impression of the area, which will be sent to a dental lab where your new crown is made to fit your teeth perfectly.

At the end of the first appointment, Dr. Edmon R. Hutchison will secure a temporary cap over the abutment. It’s important to keep in mind that the temporary crown is not a fully functional tooth, its primary purpose is to protect the abutment.

Our office will call you back for the second appointment after the dental lab has completed your crown. The temporary crown will be carefully removed and your new permanent crown will be cemented in place.

If you have a broken, fractured, or otherwise damaged tooth, you should not delay in calling Royse City Dental Care in Royse City, Texas at 972-636-2417 to have it treated and restored.

The microscopic mineral crystals of tooth enamel make it very strong. However, it’s not unheard of for something like a hard fall or a blow to the face to cause cracks chips, or fractures in tooth enamel. If you feel pain inside the tooth, the damage might extend deep into the internal structures.

Sometimes the damage doesn’t extend to the dentin or root of the tooth, yet it compromises the tooth so much that it must be repaired. In a situation like this Dr. Edmon R. Hutchison will often recommend that the tooth be restored with a crown.

A crown effectively restores a tooth by replacing the enamel layer with an artificial material, such as gold, base metals or porcelain. What your particular crown is made from will be based on the tooth’s primary function and appearance in your smile.

First Dr. Edmon R. Hutchison will examine the tooth, to assess the extent of the damage and make sure the dentin layer and root are healthy. If decay extends beyond the enamel layer, they might perform a root canal.

Dr. Edmon R. Hutchison will then remove the majority of the enamel layer, leaving just enough to surround the dentin layer of the tooth. This is called an abutment, later it will anchor your new crown. They will then take an impression of the area, which is sent to a dental lab, where your crown is made. In the meantime, they will cover the abutment with a temporary crown to protect it.

Once the dental lab has completed your permanent crown, Dr. Edmon R. Hutchison will call you in for a brief second appointment to cement the permanent crown in place.
