Bad breath from consuming pungent foods and beverages can often be handled by brushing and flossing your teeth after a meal. However, chronic bad breath can be socially embarrassing and could also be a symptom of a more serious oral or medical health concern. Taking the time to identify the factors contributing to your chronic bad breath will go a long way towards developing an effective treatment plan at Dr. Edmon R. Hutchison’s Royse City, Texas clinic.

Inconsistencies in your daily oral hygiene regimen could be at the root of the problem. This can allow the natural bacteria in your mouth to flourish, saturating your and mouth with unappealing odors. Increased consistencies with brushing and flossing can often help. It might also be beneficial to try brushing your tongue twice each day, during your oral hygiene regimen.

Chronic dry mouth is also a common cause of chronic bad breath. This could have a myriad of sources, some of the more common include side effects from a new medication, but it could also be related to dehydration as well as regular tobacco and alcohol use.

Tobacco use can also cause significant bad breath issues. The presence of tar and other chemicals in the mouth can permeate oral tissues for a long time afterward.

There are certain medical conditions that could be the underlying cause of chronic bad breath. This might include certain kidney or liver conditions. People with diabetes frequently have bad breath with a light sweet odor.

If you live in the Royse City, Texas area and you’re struggling with chronic bad breath, you can call 972-636-2417 to seek diagnosis and treatment with Dr. Edmon R. Hutchison.

Gum disease happens when the gum tissue surrounding your pearly whites pull back from the tooth and exposing the tooth and tooth roots. As this occurs, gaps begin to form between the teeth and the gum line, allowing the buildup of harmful plaque-causing bacteria in these “pockets”. As this plaque hardens, it can cause long-term problems including tooth loss.

How does this happen?
No. 1 Gum disease (or periodontitis) can result from improper brushing and daily flossing.
No. 2 Gum tissue can be affected by nighttime grinding and clenching of teeth as it wears down the enamel.
No. 3 An injury to the mouth can cause gum tissue to recede from the tooth.
No. 4 You may be at higher risk for gum disease if one or both of your parents have receding gums.
No. 6 Brushing your teeth harshly can wear down tooth enamel and gum tissue.
No. 7 If your bite is misaligned (it doesn’t match up), the constant pressure on individual teeth can create gum recession.

4 Steps to Prevent Gum Disease:
No. 1 Use a soft-bristled tooth brush and brush gently but thoroughly. Don’t forget to floss!
No. 2 Use an antimicrobial toothpaste and mouth rinse to reduce the amount of harmful in the mouth.
No. 3 Wearing a night guard can help to prevent clenching and grinding of your pearly whites while you sleep.
No 4 Six month dental cleanings will remove calculus to prevent periodontitis.

You don’t have to let gum disease keep your smile at bay. If you think you are experiencing gum disease, see one of our dentists for an evaluation and begin any necessary treatment. Untreated gum disease can eventually result in tooth loss. We invite you to call our Royse City Dental Care staff at 972-636-2417 today!
